Upcoming Tasks Widget

Tasks due in the next 7 days at a glance - Due Today, Due Soon, and Overdue summary cards, plus an expandable list of the next few tasks with inline status, priority, date editing, and quick reschedule.

The Upcoming Tasks widget brings the next 7 days of work front and centre on the Dashboard. Three summary cards at the top show how many tasks fall in each bucket (Due Today, Due Soon, Overdue), and an expandable list shows the actual next few tasks with everything you need to act on them - status, priority, due dates, and quick reschedule actions - without leaving the dashboard.

This widget is part of the customisable Dashboard layout. To show, hide, or move it, see Dashboard Layout.

Upcoming Tasks is due-date based

Use this widget for deadlines. Use Today's Focus when you want tasks scheduled to start today.

The three summary cards

Three compact cards at the top of the widget give you the headline numbers:

CardWhat it counts
Due TodayNon-completed, non-closed tasks with a due date of today
Due SoonNon-completed, non-closed tasks with a due date in the next 7 days (excluding today)
OverdueNon-completed, non-closed tasks with a due date in the past

Clicking any summary card opens the Dashboard Tasks modal filtered to that bucket. From there you can see every matching task, sort, edit, and pivot to other filters. See Stat Cards Widget for the full modal capabilities.

Use summary cards for triage

Start with Overdue, then Due Today, then Due Soon when you are deciding what needs attention first.

The expandable task list

Below the summary cards, the widget shows an expand/collapse toggle. When expanded, it displays the next 3 upcoming tasks sorted by due date (closest first). Each task row shows:

  • Checkbox - toggle complete with one click
  • Task name - click to expand for details
  • Due date - formatted intelligently (see below)
  • Status dropdown - change inline
  • Priority dropdown - change inline
  • Reschedule actions - quick buttons for Today / +1d / -1d / +1w
  • Edit button - opens the full task creation/edit modal
  • View button - navigates to the task's detail page

When fewer than 3 upcoming tasks exist, the list shows what's available. When there are more, click View All to open the tasks modal with the full list.

Smart due date formatting

The widget formats due dates in a human-readable way relative to today:

Due dateHow it shows
Today"Today · 3pm" (with time if set)
Tomorrow"Tomorrow"
Yesterday"Yesterday"
2–6 days ago"3 days ago"
Within 7 days future"Mon · 10am" (day name with time)
Beyond 7 daysLocale-formatted short date

This makes scanning the list fast - you immediately know how urgent each task is.

Inline editing

Several edits happen inline in the widget without leaving the dashboard:

  • Status - pick a new status from the dropdown; the change saves immediately
  • Priority - pick a new priority from the dropdown
  • Reschedule - click a quick-reschedule button to push or pull the due date

All inline edits use your Space's status and priority configurations - see Custom Statuses & Priorities.

For richer edits (description, tags, assignees, custom fields), use the Edit button to open the full task modal - see Creating Tasks and Task Details Page.

Inline edits update the real task

Status, priority, and date changes made here are saved to the task itself.

Recurring task handling

When you reschedule a recurring task by changing its due date, PrimeTask asks whether the change should apply to just this occurrence or all future occurrences - the standard recurring task choice. The widget delegates to the same recurrence service used everywhere else in the app. See Recurring Tasks.

Review recurring changes carefully

When rescheduling recurring work, choose whether the change applies only now or to future occurrences too.

Empty state

When there are no upcoming or overdue tasks in the next 7 days:

  • The summary cards show zero counts
  • The expanded list shows a "No upcoming tasks" message
  • A Create Task action is offered to start one

Things worth knowing

Counts are cross-Space-aware

Each Space has its own task pool. The widget only counts tasks in the active Space. Switch Spaces and the counts recalculate.

"Due Soon" doesn't include "Due Today"

Due Today is its own bucket. Due Soon counts only tasks due in the next 7 days excluding today - so the two never overlap.

Closed tasks aren't counted as overdue

A task in the Closed workflow category isn't counted as overdue even if its due date passed. Overdue counts only tasks that are still actionable (not in a complete or closed status).

Subtasks count individually

Each subtask with its own due date is counted on its own. A parent task with three subtasks all due today contributes the parent task plus each subtask to the count (when each has a due date).

The widget shows fast counts; the modal shows the full list

The widget's three cards are summaries - to see every task in a bucket and act on them in bulk, click the card to open the Dashboard Tasks modal. See Stat Cards Widget for the modal's filter system.

Reschedule actions handle recurring tasks correctly

When you reschedule a recurring task from the widget, you get the same "this occurrence vs all future" prompt as in the rest of the app. Single-instance tasks reschedule directly with no prompt.

The widget collapses by default

To keep the dashboard compact, the widget starts collapsed showing just the summary cards. Expand it to see the actual task rows.

Common questions

"Why don't tasks without a due date appear here?"

The widget is specifically for dated upcoming work. Tasks without a due date aren't "upcoming" - they're undated. To capture undated work, use the Quick Tasks widget - see Quick Tasks Widget.

"How do I see more than 3 tasks?"

Click any summary card or the View All action to open the Dashboard Tasks modal with every matching task. From the modal you can sort, edit, and switch between filter buckets.

"Can I reschedule by drag-and-drop?"

Not from the widget itself - use the quick reschedule buttons (Today, +1d, -1d, +1w) or open the task to set a custom date. For drag-to-reschedule, use the Calendar view - see Tasks Overview.

"Why do my completed tasks still appear?"

They shouldn't - the widget filters to non-completed, non-closed tasks. If you see one, check that the task's status is mapped to the complete workflow category in your Space's status configuration. See Custom Statuses & Priorities.

"Can I filter by project or assignee?"

Not from the widget. For project-or-assignee scoping, use the main Tasks page or open a project's Tasks tab - see Task Filters & Sorting.

"How does the widget interact with Today's Focus?"

The two widgets are complementary. Upcoming Tasks shows tasks due in the next 7 days. Today's Focus shows tasks starting today (or earlier) that aren't done yet - see Today's Focus Widget. A task can appear in both if it both starts and is due in the windows.

"Where do recurring tasks fit?"

The widget shows the current instance of each recurring task. When you complete it, the next instance becomes the upcoming one.

"How do I hide this widget?"

Open the Layout Editor from the Dashboard Header and toggle the Upcoming Tasks widget off. See Dashboard Layout.
